Software Design of Specialized Computational Fluid Dynamics

The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model is applied to the development of SUNWAY pollution control equipment. At the SUNWAY Research and Development Center, the laminar flow model of the fume hood was developed from the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The utility model is used mainly for improving air flow uniformity, thereby enhancing safety, reducing noise and saving energy.
First of all, the engineering team conceptualized the possible designs. Instead of building physical models, they use CFD to mimic airflow patterns, pressure transports, and visualizes areas of possible turbulence flow. Next, they establish the physical model after testing and select the best design combination for production. CFD enables us to minimize eddy currents effectively by employing the traditional fume hood design to create a safe and energy-saving fume hood design.

Features of SUNWAY Fume Hood

The construction of the new generation of the SUNWAY fume hood is a revolution in the structure and performance of fume hoods in general. The low flow rate design runs safely at lower surface wind velocity (0.3m/s), which greatly reduces energy consumption and improves operation comfort on the basis of enhanced security. The new design incorporates such innovations in engineering as the design of a new diversion backplane, which optimizes gas flow, allowing for greater control and removal of chemical gases of varying proportions. It is the best combination of safety, reliability, operability and economy. Its design, manufacture and performance test are in accordance with the international/domestic standards of ASHRAE 110-2016 and China Machinery Industry Standard Fume Hood JB/T6412-1999. The perfect and accurate aerodynamic design incorporates a high level of safety and efficiency. Performance is certified by authorities through rigorous testing.

The air in the laboratory is sucked into the front operation port under the function of the exhaust system, which then mixed with harmful gases in the hood is sucked immediately into the flow guiding system in a unidirectional horizontal flow mode. The larger openings in the lower part of the diversion system are designed for harmful gases exceeding the specific gravity of the air, while the smaller openings in the middle part of the diversion system are designed to have a better diversion effect for the less specific gravity of the harmful gases. A small part of the air in the laboratory enters the hood smoothly and continuously through the four directional air wings (left and right side walls, front window handle and air supply panel at the front of the platform), which improves the uniformity of the surface air speed and ensures the pollution control effect of the front window operation outlet. Harmful gases enter the back exhaust chamber through the air guide system, and the mixed bypass system flows upwards.

Performance Test of ASHRAE 110 Fume Hood

The ASHRAE 110 standard is a comprehensive method for evaluating the safety of fume hood operators through repeated quantitative tests of the exhaust hoods. It was first released in 1985 and revised in 1995m and the latest version is the 2016 version. The standard assesses the performance of the fume hood’s control of pollutants through a series of rigorous tests.


ASHRAE 110 and ANSI/AIHA Z9.5 are internationally recognized as the main test methods and standards used to evaluate the safety performance of fume hoods. The tests include the surface average wind velocity test, visual smoke test and SF6 tracer gas test. They can be divided into three types of tests in stages, namely the manufacturer's ex-factory test (AM), installation site test (AI) and annual periodic effectiveness test (AU). Qualified test instruments must be used by qualified test operators and the tests carried out in accordance with specified test procedures.

The fume hood is a first-level barrier to protect scientific researchers from toxic chemical fumes in chemical laboratories. It can be used as important safety backup equipment for experiments. It protects the scientific researchers and experimental environment when a chemical experiment fails, and the chemical fumes, vapors, dust and toxic gases are released from the container in large amounts.
